Knowing God

God cannot be known in the conventional way of knowing.

If God is spirit, then God is beyond the reach of ego and the five senses — sight, sound, smell, taste, touch.

I cannot know God in the conventional way of knowing.

My imagination, my thoughts, my perceptions, my beliefs and even my convictions — at best, these are a very flawed attempt at connecting with God. They are the flesh trying to grasp what is Spirit.

For that which is born of the flesh is flesh. That which is born of the Spirit is spirit.

The only true knowing of God is the experience of God unveiled in me as God.

Richard Rohr puts it this way: God refuses to be an object of knowledge like all other objects of knowledge. God can only be known as a fellow subject. It will feel like you are being known through more than you are knowing something yourself. It is a participative knowing. A reciprocal knowing. Not something you achieve. Something you receive.

For many of us, the journey to this place started in the senses — in doctrine, devotion and effort. But Grace has a way of drawing you deeper. Into the flow. Into the river within you. The cooling, cleansing waters wash away the illusion.

And as your vision clears, your Beloved emerges.

In that moment, you are transformed. For when we see him, we become like him.

God can only be experienced.
